Insects and People (ENT 201Q) - - NC State Universty - - spring 2015

15 freshman undergraduates; elective course

Course description: An introduction to the fascinating world of insects and how they interact with people. Included is a brief survey of insect natural history, diversity, structure, function, and behavior. This is followed by examples of beneficial and harmful insects in a variety of human activities including some sampling of the profound impacts insects have had on history, society, and culture.

 

Principles of Ecology (BIO 250) - - University of Wisconsin – Richland - - spring 2011

8 freshman/sophomore undergraduates; required course

Course description: An exploration of the interrelationships between living organisms and their environment. Topics include ecosystems concepts, population dynamics, community organization and distribution, and application of ecological principles to humans and their environment. Includes lecture, lab, demonstrations, discussions, and field trips. Also includes semester-long research project.

 

Animal Biology (ZOO 101) - - University of Wisconsin – Richland - - spring 2011

25 freshman/sophomore undergraduates; required course

Course description: An introduction to general biological principles - structure and function of cells, histology, embryology, heredity, ecology, and evolution. Includes a survey of the animal kingdom and a survey of the structure and function of the vertebrate body. Includes lecture, lab, demonstrations, and discussions.

Vertebrate Natural History (FW 373) - - NC State University - - spring 2014

30 junior/senior undergraduates; required course

Description of duties: I helped teach the lecture and laboratory sections of this course. Labs were held in-classroom, in the field, or at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC. I also assisted and facilitated several field trips throughout the semester. I was the lead on a semester-long for which students developed their own field guide to the vertebrates of NC.

 

Forest Wildlife Management (FW 404) - - NC State University - - fall 2013

63 undergraduates and 2 graduate students; required course

Description of duties: My fellow TA and I helped teach the lab section of the course and implemented and graded two homework assignments and a plant collection. We led students on plant walks in the field throughout the semester. Additionally, I headed a videography exercise for graduate students in the class. Subjects of videos included topics covered in lecture, and the finished videos will be used the finished videos in future classes (i.e., Flipping the Classroom).

 

Dendrology (ENR 272) - - Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey - - fall 2007

15 junior/senior undergraduates; elective course

Description of duties: I helped teach the laboratory section of this course, which centered on identification of eastern trees in the field. Labs were held both on campus and locations in the field throughout NJ.

20 junior/senior undergraduates; elective course

Description of duties: I helped teach the laboratory section of this course, which centered on identification of eastern birds in the field. Labs were held both on campus and locations in the field throughout NJ.

I gave a seminar on wind energy development and wildlife conservation to 30 first-year veterinary students.

I gave a lecture on insect control to about 75 undergraduate students.

I gave a lecture on passerines to 30 junior- and senior-level undergraduate students.

 

Wildlife Management (FW 353) - - NC State University - - fall 2013

I gave a lecture on wildlife and parks to 135 junior- and senior-level undergraduate students.

 

Forest Wildlife Management (FW 404) - - NC State University - - fall 2012 & 2013

I gave lectures on dead wood ecology and upland game bird management in this course for two years. Each year, there were approximately 65 undergraduate students in the class.
