The Bug Scrapbook

Context:  Students were instructed to prepare a scrapbook consisting of newspaper articles, magazine stories, pictures, advertisements, cartoons, etc. related to insects. The goal of the exercise was for students to explore the many ways insects affect our everyday lives and the study of "cultural entomology".

Reflection:  Some students really didn't like the scrapbook assignment. They interpreted it as busy work and some sort of grade-school exercise. On the other hand, many other students appreciated the chance to boost their grade with a creative assignment graded largely on effort. I believe the scrapbook was a valuable assignment, especially for visual learners, which reinforced the essence of our class - the interaction between people and insects. Several of the students' scrapbooks were exceptionally well done (see above).
